Key West, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway follows the Old Keys Railroad Bridges of US 1 and is also home to the Key Deer, Great White Heron, Crocodile Lake, and Key West National Wildlife Refuges. The Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge was formed in 1957 and protects the tiny Key Deer and other national wildlife resources, including 17 federally listed species. The Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1938 and has almost 200,000 acres of open water and islands. Crocodile Lake was designated in 1980 and is used to protect breeding and nesting grounds for the endangered American crocodile. Key West was established in 1908 by President Roosevelt and is a preserve and breeding grounds for sea turtles, birds and other wildlife.
